Opportunity Description:
The Helen Schuler Nature Centre Outdoor Learning Classroom and Amphitheatre replaces an aging outdoor classroom that is at the end of its life-cycle. The new outdoor classroom will provide:
1. Universal accessibility.
2. Functional outdoor space for groups to gather for field studies and engage with Nature Centre staff and volunteers.
3. Presentation and event space with stunning scenic views.
4. Flexible, social space for all park users.
5. Tranquil location to pause and view the surrounding landscape.
The completed project will provide an inspiring community gathering space that will encourage visitors to slow down, explore, and reflect upon their natural surroundings. The experience will create an emotional connection between people and nature. Studies now show a causational
effect between a person’s feelings of connection and the likelihood that person has to care for and steward natural environments.
The Outdoor Learning Classroom and Amphitheatre will serve as a demonstration site for our community. It will encourage further development, and support for, similar outdoor learning classroom sites throughout Southern Alberta.
In 2018, O2 Planning and Design completed work on a conceptual design package for the Outdoor Learning Classroom. Friends of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre Society have secured funding for detailed design and construction through grants and fundraising. Consequently, the project is ready to proceed beyond the concept phase. This project will pick up from the concept
stage, include detailed design, and follow through to construction completion.
